[HERITAGE CONSERVATION: THEORIES, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE]

Self-reflection

This module has given me a new perspective on the role of architecture in heritage conservation. I’ve learned that architecture is not just about creating functional or aesthetically pleasing spaces but also about maintaining the identity and stories tied to historic structures. The module highlighted how conservation efforts go beyond physical preservation, focusing on the intangible cultural significance that buildings and landscapes hold for communities. I now realize the importance of integrating heritage conservation into modern design, ensuring that the past and present coexist harmoniously. This understanding will shape my approach to future projects, as I aim to create designs that respect and celebrate historical context while meeting contemporary needs.

Assignment 1 – Cultural Mapping + Site Study

This assignment emphasizes building a solid foundation of understanding and appreciation for heritage and conservation practices. Through site visits and cultural mapping, students are introduced to systematic tools that engage communities in identifying and documenting local cultural assets. The insights gained from this process aim to inform collective strategies, planning processes, and other initiatives. The study focuses on areas around Central Market, Medan Pasar, and Petaling Street, providing a rich setting for exploring cultural heritage and its significance.

Final Project – Heritage and Conservation Proposal

This task involves creating a proposal for the adaptive reuse of a building chosen from Assignment 1, with an emphasis on conserving its façade and five-foot walkway while maintaining its original characteristics and heritage value. The objective is to develop strategies that ensure the building’s preservation while adapting it to meet modern needs, thus extending its lifespan and relevance.
