[.A2 | CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ASIAN ARCHITECTURE]

This research-focused project delved into the effects of globalization on the architectural landscape in Asia, prompting a critical analysis of key issues observed during site visits. Employing a problem-based learning approach, we engaged in group discussions and sought guidance from tutors to develop a framework for appraisal. The project involved identifying a pivotal issue related to architecture and place identity, the adaptive reuse of traditional architecture, sustainable heritage tourism, or the role of cultural spaces in urban settings. Following an extensive literature review, we formulated a research title and created a visually compelling poster to convey our findings. The culmination of this project was a 10-minute video presentation, where we articulated our research outcomes. This endeavor aimed to enhance our critical thinking regarding the impact of globalization on architecture, provide a detailed narrative of the historical progression of vernacular architecture in Asia, and interpret contemporary architectural challenges through the lenses of tradition, modernity, and globalization.

This research-driven project provided me with an in-depth exploration of the relationship between globalization and Asian architecture. Through a meticulous combination of on-site analysis and comprehensive literature review, I delved into crucial topics such as the transformation of place identity, the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, sustainable tourism practices, and the significance of cultural spaces in modern cities. The collaborative nature of the project allowed my group to construct a robust appraisal framework, which we presented through both a well-crafted research poster and a video presentation. This journey not only expanded my understanding of the historical evolution of vernacular architecture in Asia but also enriched my perspective on the contemporary challenges posed by globalization. The project refined my skills in critical analysis, research, and effective communication, emphasizing the nuanced ways in which global influences are reshaping architectural practices and the cultural identity of spaces in Asia.
