[.P1B/C | RECLAIMED ARCHITECTURE]

The focus of this project is to design a poetic and meaningful architectural intervention that preserves and promotes local dance culture, set within the context of reclaimed land in Melaka. The design aims to celebrate both native and contemporary dance traditions through spaces for performance, exhibition, and education, while emphasizing cultural coexistence amidst modernization.
It seeks to create an architecture that evokes emotion and engages with the Genius Loci, drawing inspiration from the movement, rhythm, and transparency of dance. The project integrates environmental sustainability and passive design strategies, responding to the reclaimed site’s conditions, while ensuring a harmonious blend of outdoor and indoor spaces. Additionally, the program includes versatile spaces for dance practice, performances, food, and retail, forming a cohesive whole that invites visitors into an immersive cultural experience.

Site visit

In this phase, the focus is on gathering comprehensive site data by engaging with the local community and researching the historical, cultural, and environmental context of the site. This includes meeting with local dance communities, such as Baba Nyonya, Kristang, and Chetti, to understand their cultural practices and how architecture supports these activities.

Viseral board

In this phase, the focus shifts to expressing the embodied experience of the site through a Visceral Board. This task involves synthesizing the physical, emotional, and sensory qualities of the site, including its atmosphere, movement, and cultural identity.

.Reflection
The series of assignments for Architectural Design III has been a comprehensive exploration of culture, site context, and architectural expression. Each phase offered a distinct focus, collectively enriching my understanding of how architecture interacts with its physical, cultural, and historical surroundings.

In Project 1A, I delved into poetic architecture, exploring how sensory experiences and Genius Loci influence spatial design. The reflection on the Godown Arts Centre and the American Museum of Natural History Richard Gilder Center allowed me to critically analyze how architectural spaces evoke emotions and narratives.

Project 1B expanded this foundation by engaging with site-specific research and collective storytelling. Investigating the reclaimed land near Encore Melaka deepened my understanding of environmental and cultural transformations. Collaborating with peers to produce the Site Chronicle and Visceral Board honed my skills in research, analysis, and visual communication. Translating embodied experiences into tangible representations enhanced my ability to connect abstract ideas with design intentions.

In Project 1C, the culmination of these efforts, I synthesized the lessons learned into designing a dance annex celebrating local dance culture. Integrating environmental considerations, cultural narratives, and poetic qualities pushed me to consider how architecture can support artistic expression and cultural preservation. The iterative process of model-making, drawing, and presenting helped refine my ideas and develop a cohesive design language.

These assignments collectively emphasized the importance of site sensitivity, cultural engagement, and poetic storytelling in architectural design. They challenged me to approach design with greater depth and thoughtfulness, fostering skills that will shape my future architectural endeavors.
